Patan is Nepal’s second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Through the golden gate of Sundhoka is the old royal palace complex. The Torana above the gate is richly gilded and features the ten-armed goddess, Taleju, and her loyal guards. Located on a 1,400 metre high hill, Swayanbunath is a Buddhist monastery complex and one of the most interesting sights in Nepal. The country’s oldest stupa dates back to the 5th century and is entered from an easterly direction up a staircase that contains three hundred and sixty-five steps. Endless rows of prayer mills and religious images are the instruments of the people’s deep faith. Hidden in a canyon and located on top of a mountain creek, Dakshinkali stands guard over the valley. This wonderful place is dedicated to the bloody goddess, Kali. The customs of the people in the ‘Kingdom On The Roof Of The World’ may seem somewhat strange. But this land of jungle and eternal snow has developed according to its own rich traditions and beliefs. Like magic!

The Victoria Terminus was built and is one of the most impressive train stations in the world. The lavishly decorated brown sandstone building dates back to1888 and is the most beautiful Victorian Gothic building in India, built during the high season of British colonial rule. The Dhobi Ghats or 'Banks of the Washers', is the name of the 'Biggest laundrette in the world'. In the open air, hundreds of dhobis do much of the city's 'laundry'. In small allotments surrounded by low walls, launderers wash from dusk to dawn. On Malabar Hill, between the villas of numerous film stars and luxury apartments, is the fascinating Adishwarji Jain Temple, a good place in which to gain an insight into the harsh rituals of the wealthy faithful who worshipped the first Jain saints. The legendary Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, with its striking façade and red cupolas, had a spectacular origin. When industrial mogul, Tata, was refused entry to a British hotel restaurant by a sign that stated, FOR EUROPEANS ONLY, he decided to build the city's finest hotel. Nowhere else are India's many remarkable contrasts so obvious and nowhere else can India be experienced so intensely as in Mumbai, mega metropolis and unique Gateway to India!

The imperial capital for over 1,000 years, Kyoto is widely considered Japan’s most beautiful city. Emerging from ultra-modern Kyoto Station, the city’s busy downtown area can come as a shock. Yet old Kyoto is never far away. Just to the east is Gion, where you’ll catch glimpses of the geisha, the very embodiment of old Kyoto. Further east, amid narrow alleyways like Ishibe Koji, you’ll find traditional Kyoto-style houses and some of the city’s finest Ryokan. Just a rickshaw ride away, are the traffic-free streets of Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka, where teahouses line the routes to nearby hilltop temples. Kyoto is known as “the city of 10,000 shrines”. There are places of spacious austerity, such as the Heian Shrine, and intimate places, such as the Shorenin Temple. There are temples dominated by stone, such as the Kiyomizadera, and others, such as Tofukuji, which are crafted from ancient timbers. Kodai Temple features a raked gravel garden, which represents the infinite ocean, while Nanzenji, sits within the shade of a 19th- century aqueduct. Nothing quite compares to Fushimi Inari-taisha, which spans an entire mountainside and features a path lined with 10,000 tori gates. You’ll find old Kyoto in the palace grounds of Nijo Castle, and in the fleeting cherry blossom season.
